    GA07003WC and the half marathon:GA07002WC.

  • Would you describe the course as hilly or flat, rural or urban, road or trail?
It’s going to be flat and fast…that is the nature of
Southwest Georgia! Mostly urban and mostly road.

  • Where is the race located? What time does it start?
The race is being held in Albany, Georgia and begins at 7:00 am on March 2, 2013, at the Veteran's Park, next to our civic center on Front Street.

  • What is the race day temperature/weather expected to be like?
Average low is 45 degrees and the average high is 72 degrees for this time of year.

  • How many people do you anticipate will run?
We will cap it at 2,000 participants.

Also occurring the same day/time is the annual SB&T Bike Race criterium.

  • What kind of sports drink will be available on the course?
Lemon-Lime Gatorade will be available at all the water stops, located every 2 miles for the first 18 miles and every mile thereafter.

  • Is there a time limit for the marathon or half marathon?
Yes, there is a 7-hour limit for the course.

  • Are there Pace Groups to help runners achieve their goals?
Yes, as a benefit to the Marathon and Half marathon runners the Pace Team will be there for you. We will be offering pace groups led by experienced pacers for a wide variety of times including many of the Boston qualifying standards. We hope you will find this support useful as you strive to achieve your marathon goals.

  • Will there be any fun highlights along the way?
Water stations are holding a contest for best decorated, best cheering section, neighborhoods and colleges along the route will also be in on the fun!

  • What will the post-race festivities and refreshments include?
Post race festivities include a Music Festival kicking off in the downtown district, just two blocks from the start/finish. Music begins at noon and bands finish at midnight. Each participant gets a free entrance ticket. The SB&T Bike Race will be taking place in downtown Albany as well. Finish line refreshments will include water, MillerCoors beer, fruit, bagels, etc. with vendors in the downtown district offering other food choices.

  • Do runners run by anything notable along the course? (Any historic sites? Any particularly scenic areas?)
    • Start is on Front Street next to Veteran's Park, near the Riverfront.
    • Pass Albany's historic Sand Dunes, thought to be the northern reaches of the Gulf of Mexico thousands of years ago
    • Two college campuses, Albany State University and Darton College
    • Lake Loretta (particularly scenic and tranquil neighborhood and lake)
    • Circles through Rawson Circle, a designated garden neighborhood
    • Pass Hilsman Park - a natural limesink.
    • Run last stretch along side participants in the GA Cup Cycling Series criterium then…
    • Through Thronateeska Heritage Museum: kind of unique to run through a building which happens to be an old railroad depot!
    • Finish is along a scenic river trail at RiverFront Park.

  • What will the crowd support be like?
Our community is so excited to cheer on the runners and walkers for this event! We plan to have cheer groups, neighborhood groups and bands along the route.

  • What different types of awards will you be giving away? Would you say you have a "Best Schwag" (great give-a-way) item and if so, please explain.
$3,000 to first place male & female; $2,000 to second and third place male and female and $1,000 to third place male & female and $250 to first place wheel/crank chair athlete. No additional cash awards, but age categories will go three deep and “unique awards” are planned.

  • Please tell us anything else about your race that makes it unique.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the Willson Hospice House, an in-patient Hospice facility for Southwest Georgia. It is also the first Marathon sponsored by SNICKERS® MARATHON® Bar, which is manufactured here in Albany, GA!
